Sun Devil Basketball Players Association

Thanks to John Brooking the beginning of a Sun Devil Support System was put into place during the 1970’s. John organized former players to test their skills in a yearly match up prior to one of the basketball games. Players were recognized at half time and culminated each event with dinner.

During the time that Kevin White was the Athletic Director, there was a move to bring back the traditions and history of ASU athletics. Frank Kush was hired to promote and generate this interest for all sports. When Gene Smith came on board he also endorsed this effort in order to reconnect alumni to ASU athletics. This was done under the umbrella of the Varsity A Club.

Due to ASU’s renewed interest in former athletes, several alumni decided to implement a more formal organization for basketball. We believed this could revitalize the alumni association to become more active and help bridge the gap between current players and former players. This would help maintain a foundation and structure for the future of Sun Devil Basketball. We facilitated expanding events to include; a football tailgate, a visit to watch the players practice and join them at the training table. Former players were invited to attend a Uof A pre-game dinner and halftime recognition at center court. At the end of the year current graduate players were awarded framed alumni association certificates during the annual basketball banquet.

In 2006 former players were once again invited to watch the team practice and join them for dinner at their training table. We organized a large event in order to honor Coach Bill Kajikawa for all his years of service to the university. The dinner was well attended and very successful in uniting players from 5 decades. At the end of the year, a special recognition dinner for players for the 1980-1981 team was held at the Hobbs Family Center. Each of the former players received a framed Alumni Association certificate and they were honored at the halftime ceremony. In early June several of the alumni association players were asked to attend a private reception for the new coach Herb Sendek.

The Sun Devil Basketball Players Association is planning more outreach events for the 2006-2007 season.
