Diabetes Prevention

Diabetes has been called the 21st Century plague for the American Indian people. In an attempt to help fight this dread disease, AAIA has joined with the Shakopee Mdewakanton Dakota Community for the last 4 years to developing and co-hosting a regional conference for the American Indian diabetic. Unlike most such conferences, these conferences were aimed directly at the diabetic and his or her family, to provide useful information that the diabetic can bring home and use.

This Northern Plains Regional American Indian Diabetes Conference has become a model for other regions of the United States. Many practical, yet diverse, topics are covered. Some examples are: How to exercise if you are in a wheelchair, Everyday cooking for the diabetic.

In 2003, AAIA anticipates working with other tribes to offer conferences in other areas of the country.
